Healthcare in the Philippines for Expats: Quality and Cost
Why the Philippines Is a Hidden Medical Haven
🩺 World-Class Care Without the World-Class Price Tag
Imagine walking into a private clinic, seeing a U.S.-licensed physician, receiving compassionate care, and walking out with a full treatment plan — for less than your insurance co-pay in the U.S.
That’s not a dream. It’s reality for those who receive medical care in the Philippines.
💰 90% Cheaper — With Better Service
Here are real, personal examples from our family:
- 🧲 MRI scan in Manila: $36 USD (vs. $3,500 in Los Angeles)
- 👨⚕️ Doctor consultation: $40 USD total — exam, diagnosis, and treatment included
- 💊 Prescription meds: Often available over the counter at wholesale prices
In many cases, the entire cash cost for a year of care is less than the monthly premium of a U.S. Medicare Plan B or commercial insurance plan.
🧑⚕️ Why It’s So Affordable — and Safe
- ❌ No malpractice insurance industry driving up fear and costs
- ❌ No Big Pharma monopolies controlling treatment plans
- ✅ Minimal red tape around proven, safe medical tech
- ✅ Direct-to-patient pricing with no insurance middlemen
In the Philippines, doctors aren’t bound by excessive lawsuits or administrative fear. They’re trained in top medical schools, many with overseas residency experience, and they often practice both in the Philippines and abroad. They’re focused on care — not compliance.
🧪 Advanced Tech — Before the U.S. Approves It
Because the U.S. medical industry often conducts its clinical trials in Asia (especially the Philippines), doctors here gain early access to new equipment and therapies years before they are fully approved in the U.S.
For example:
- 🩻 Imaging, diagnostics, and regenerative therapies
- ⚡ Light, magnetic, and electrotherapies (not yet FDA-cleared)
- 🧬 Longevity and genetic optimization tools under global research partnerships
Filipino clinics are often the testbed for the same innovations that won’t hit U.S. markets for another 10–15 years — but here, they’re used responsibly and affordably, right now.
👵 Family Experience — More Than a Testimonial
Van’s parents, both medical professionals themselves (a doctor and a physical therapist), moved to Manila and discontinued their U.S. insurance coverage — not because they couldn’t afford it, but because they received better care for less, without the bureaucracy.
They were amazed not just by the cost, but by the honor, joy, and genuine concern of the Filipino caregivers. Here, patients are seen as people — not billing codes.
🌎 Medical Tourism — Or Just Smart Stewardship?
Many of our clients split their time between the U.S. and the Philippines. Some retire full-time, while others maintain U.S. residency and just come here for dental, surgical, or specialized care.
You can use your health savings wisely — or let it evaporate into overpriced deductibles and waitlists. The choice is yours.

Frequently asked questions
Is healthcare in the Philippines good enough for Americans?
Yes in the main cities. Private hospitals in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao offer modern imaging, several carry JCI accreditation, and many physicians trained abroad, including American and European doctors practising in the country. Care is competitive and priced in cash. Provincial care is more variable, which is why location choice matters for retirees.
How much cheaper is medical care in the Philippines?
Cash prices are commonly a fraction of U.S. prices: consultations in the tens of dollars and imaging in the tens to low hundreds. Our own family's experience is on this page; costs vary by hospital and city.
Does Medicare cover me in the Philippines?
No. Original Medicare does not pay for care outside the U.S. Most retirees we work with keep free Part A for visits home and instead hold a $10,000 to $50,000 cash health reserve, a Philippine health plan with a large hospitalisation limit that returns premiums with interest if unclaimed, and travel medical and evacuation cover for short periods. We put the actual policies in front of you through a licensed adviser.
Which hospitals do expats use?
Commonly St. Luke's, Makati Medical Center, The Medical City and Asian Hospital in Metro Manila, and Chong Hua or Cebu Doctors in Cebu. We help you pick a home near the care you expect to need.
Is there a Philippine health plan that returns your premiums?
Yes. Several Philippine insurers sell plans with hospitalisation limits around $1 million, or a year in hospital, that refund all premiums paid with interest if you have not claimed by the end of the term. Nothing like it is sold in the U.S. Terms and underwriting vary; we compare the real policies with you.
